OSU Chapter Holds "1100 Dollar Day" Event

AFP's Oregon State University Chapter held a four-hour event on campus today, asking students to sign petitions to freeze "incidental fees." The fees, which have grown rapidly in recent years, are scheduled to reach a total of $1,100 beginning next Fall. The fees pay for a variety of campus programs, including recreational athletics, sustainability and counseling, most of which benefit only a small minority of students. Included in the fees is money for "contingencies," which represents a slush fund for use by student government.

With Oregon's economy tanking due to failed leadership by the Governor and Legislature, students are finding it increasingly difficult to afford even the basic education that state schools provide. This year, private donors had to be found to provide promised education grants when tax dollars ran out mid-year.
