MILWAUKEE-The Wisconsin chapter of the free market grassroots group Americans for Prosperity (AFP-WI) today lauded Senator Russ Feingold for his vote against the 2009 Omnibus Spending bill. The bloated package was chalk full of big government giveaways, containing 8,500 earmarks and growing the size of government by eight percent. The Wisconsin senator was one of only three Democrats to vote against the bill, the other being Sens. Claire McCaskill (Mo.) and Evan Bayh (Ind.).
“Liberals in Washington are on a spending binge and it’s good to see that even some of their own are starting to reject it. Senator Feingold took an unpopular position within his own party on behave of the American people.” said AFP-WI State Director Mark Block. “He deserves Wisconsin’s thanks for doing that.”
Feingold opposed the bill in the face of significant pressure from his own leadership and even the threat of reprisal for his principled stand. He went one step further than simply voting against it and called on President Obama to veto the measure that funds the federal government through September of this year.
“I applaud Senator Feingold for voting against the 2009 Omnibus Spending bill,” said Block. “and truely respect his principled stand against wasteful earmarks.”
