KEY VOTE ALERT
March 17, 2009
Dear Member of the 2009-2010 General Assembly,
The thousands of grassroots members of Americans for Prosperity-North Carolina are dedicated to free markets, lower taxes and limited government. We are concerned about the ever growing burden placed on taxpayers through forced public funding of political campaigns.
House Bill 120 would expand taxpayer financing of political campaigns to municipal races. Taxpayers should not be forced to fund campaigns they disagree with. This bill could for the first time force taxpayers to fund politicians they cannot vote for because they live in a city that does not elect all its representatives on an at-large basis.
Taxpayer financing of elections also is likely unconstitutional after the recent United States Supreme Court decision in Davis v. FEC. The legislature should not be expanding these unconstitutional programs rather the General Assembly should be repealing them.
AFP-NC urges you to vote against House Bill 120 (Public Municipal Campaigns) and/or any bill that expands forced taxpayer support of political campaigns.
This key vote will be included on our state legislative report card that will be published, sent to AFP members and distributed to the general public.
The grassroots members of Americans for Prosperity-North Carolina call on you to reject any expansion of taxpayer funding of political campaigns
Sincerely,
Dallas H. Woodhouse
State Director
