Oklahoma City (March 27, 2009) State Capitol – Today, Democratic Floor Leader Mike Brown, D-Tahlequah, issues this statement in response to a recent press release issued by the Americans for Prosperity concerning Thursday’s House vote on Senate Concurrent Resolution 8:
“Unfortunately, the resolution known as SCR8 – which calls on our Congressional delegation to oppose the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) – passed the State House of Representatives yesterday. Due to a procedural omission, the vote was not recorded – but I can tell you that several of my colleagues and I voted against it.
“Yesterday, a conservative organization known as the Americans for Prosperity released a statement claiming that SCR8 passed the House unanimously. Though that statement may be convenient for them, it is completely false.
“The House Journal may not reflect it, but there was serious Democratic opposition to this legislation. It’s irresponsible for an outside party – whose bias against the EFCA is clear – to claim that the resolution passed unanimously.
“My colleagues and I who voted against this resolution did so because it would empower employers to break attempts by employees to fight for better wages and better benefits. SCR8 seeks to undermine the American dream of making a better life for one’s family. The resolution opposes an act that would put people before profits, and the fact that this resolution passed adds to the House Republicans’ lengthy track record of putting profits before people.
“The mission statement on the Americans for Prosperity website states that they ‘are committed to educating citizens about economic policy and mobilizing those citizens as advocates in the public policy process.’ Well, claiming that SCR8 passed unanimously may help mobilize their network of supporters, but spreading misinformation does nothing to educate the public.
“I call on Stuart Jolly and the Americans for Prosperity to retract the email they sent out yesterday, to make every effort to publish an accurate counting of the vote and to apologize for their carelessness.”
