The effort to repeal the RGGI Cap & Trade scheme and put an end to the destructive carbon tax on New Jersey businesses and ratepayers took a major turn this afternoon.
In a joint press conference with Americans for Prosperity, State Senator Paul Sarlo (D-Bergen, Essex, Passaic) publicly announced his support of legislation to repeal the secretive and failing RGGI Cap & Trade scheme.
In so doing, Sen. Sarlo became the 41st legislator to join the repeal effort – but, more importantly, the very first Democrat to do so.
Primary sponsors of the RGGI repeal legislation, Sen. Mike Doherty (R-23) and Assemblywoman Alison McHose (R-24), were also on hand and spoke at today’s press conference. Speakers also included Larry Blatterfein of the New Jersey Restaurant Association and Chris Caputo, owner of Chris’ Ridge Auto Service in Rutherford, site of today’s press conference.
During his remarks, Sen. Sarlo outlined the reasons for his co-sponsorship of the repeal legislation, while urging his fellow Democratic lawmakers to join him in putting an end to the destructive RGGI Cap & Trade scheme.

Sen. Sarlo has rightfully determined that RGGI is nothing but a tax on energy that will damage our state’s economy and kill jobs while enriching speculators and insiders on Wall Street.
New Jersey taxpayers are already saddled with some of the highest taxes in the nation. Our state cannot expect to be competitive with other states and enjoy a prosperous and vibrant economy when also being subject to the highest electricity rates.
AFP thanks Sen. Sarlo for taking this courageous stand on behalf of New Jersey businesses and ratepayers.
