McGovern: No to Card Check

George McGovern. Remember him? Former US Senator from South Dakota who lost in a landslide to Richard Nixon in 1972. Arguably the most liberal candidate to ever run for President, McGovern is adamantly opposed to Card Check.
Click here to read his detailed criticism of the proposed bill in the Op/Ed section of the Wall Street Journal.

Sen. McGovern's concerns begin, of course, with the destruction of the secret ballot process. But, he digs deeper into the proposal. The real issue is with mandatory arbitration. The current collective bargaining laws allow for negotiation in good faith. In other words, as an employee you want to conclude negotiations because you need to earn a salary. As an employer, you want to conclude negotiations because you need experienced employees to make sure your business is running properly. This is how the free market works! Card Check destroys that balance by appointing a government bureaucrat to artificially negotiate arbitration.

As I previously wrote, with Sen. Specter (D-PA) switching political affiliation, the bill which was considered DOA, now has new life. Stay tuned for further action from AFP-Maryland...
