In response to requests from two grassroots watchdog organizations, the Somonauk Board of Education has agreed to make district financial information available online.

“The district has posted all monthly financials from July 1, 2009 to date (the fiscal year starts July 1) and will continue to do so each month,” said Superintendent M. Susan Workman.

Joe Calomino, state director of Americans for Prosperity, spoke during the public portion of the meeting, telling the board it is possible to make the information without special software at no cost to the already financially-challenged district.

“We are happy with the board’s stated efforts, and will be monitoring them over the next several months to ensure that the board follows through,” Calomino said after the meeting.

The board also agreed to reinstate the agriculture program. Resident Susan Fox called that a “huge win for the community.” Fox is the founder of CORE – Community Organized for Responsibility in Education.

“Also noted was the significant impact that CORE has had on some difficult decision-making on the board of the board. Somonauk has brought back all but three teachers. The ‘pay-for-play’ fee of $200 per student per sport has been reduced. In addition, the art and choral programs have been reinstated in both the middle and high schools,” Fox said.

“We are pleased with these initial steps made by the district.

“Moreover, we are grateful for all the CORE supporters who spread the word about these issues throughout the community, to Americans for Prosperity for their affiliation and continued support, and to Rep. Bob Pritchard for his personal support and his efforts to bring state attention to this matter,” Fox said.
