Cap and Trade Running out of Steam in the House

A very revealing article profiling the difficulties Democrats are having getting their own house in order on the cap and trade bill hit the presses today.

After the Waxman-Markey bill was eviscerated in the Energy and Commerce Committee in order to buy the votes of committee members in districts who depend on fossil fuel for jobs, energy and economic viability, there is now nothing left to buy off the agricultural community.

House Agriculture Committee Chairman, and key Democratic opponent of the bill, Collin Peterson (D-Minn.) said, “I’m just estimating the number of votes that will be against this. I suspect that the list has grown as more members have gotten a chance to look at this. I mean, my list has grown.”

The most prescient part of his statement is not that opposition is growing but that it has occurred once “more members have gotten a chance to look” at the bill. Railroading legislation through as fast as possible has been a hallmark of the Obama/Pelosi/Reid approach to governing.

It’s not surprising that once lawmakers actually read the legislation they oppose the centralization and crippling economic impacts of these policies.

It looks like the cap and trade train might be running out of steam. Stay tuned.
