TOPEKA, KAN. – The Kansas chapter of the grassroots group Americans for Prosperity commends efforts by Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins to increase transparency and to force members of Congress to recognize the fiscal impact of their votes.
HR 3350, introduced by Jenkins would require passage of a resolution stating the cost analysis from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), and stating that the governmental body acknowledges the CBO score, and how that score could affect the deficit and/or national debt.
“Too often, our senators and representatives vote on legislation without regard to the dollar signs attached,” said AFP-Kansas state director Derrick Sontag. “We applaud Rep. Jenkins, as well as Reps. Tiahrt and Moran who have co-sponsored the bill, for their efforts acknowledging the fiscal impact of all legislation put before Congress.
“This bill will force members of Congress to recognize the long-term ramifications of how they vote. If this bill had been in place when the federal stimulus bill passed, more members would have been aware that the Congressional Budget Office stated its passage would lead to a lower Gross Domestic Product ten years from now than if Congress had done nothing at all,” Sontag said.
