Listen to AFP-VA's new ad below urging Virginia Senator Jim Webb not to squander away the voices of Virginians on lame duck legislation like cap-and-trade this winter. Call him today at 202-224-4024 or e-mail him here and tell him not to vote alongside big-spending liberals in Washington.
Senate Democrats expect to lose Senate seats this cycle, and are likely to lose even more seats in 2012 and 2014. They are looking to a lame duck session as their last, best chance to advance cap-and-trade and other major left-wing priorities.
Big-spending liberals in Washington have been quoted as saying that this lame-duck session will be a chance for liberals to feel "free and liberated and feeling that they can take a risk or do something," (Sen. John Kerry) and that Congress IS "going to have a lame-duck session" and that the Obama-Reid-Pelosi machine is "not giving up." (Sen. Harry Reid) Meanwhile, Sen. Kent Conrad expects this to be “one of the most significant lame-duck sessions in the history of the United States," while Arizona Rep. Raul Grijalva, co-chairman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, notes that “the lame duck would be the last chance, quite honestly, for the foreseeable future” for the liberal big spenders to get their legislation passed in Congress.
For President Obama and Harry Reid to succeed in jamming their extreme agenda through in the lame duck session, they will need to get past the 60 vote cloture threshold to overcome a filibuster in the Senate. That will be a heavy lift, especially because special elections in Delaware, Illinois, and West Virginia may allow new anti-lame duck senators to be seated.
They will near unanimous support from moderates in both parties to make it happen and will almost certainly need Jim Webb’s vote.
Urge Webb to do the right thing. A lame duck session should not be used to circumvent a national election and jam through cap-and-trade and other extreme left-wing agenda items!
