Americans for Prosperity today released a policy paper detailing the organization’s recommendations for the so-called Super Committee. The committee is tasked with identifying $1.5 trillion in deficit reduction measures. AFP’s recommendations lay out over $5 trillion in spending cuts over a ten-year period.

“AFP remains opposed to this committee’s organization and structure. The American people elected 535 members to debate and vote on laws that govern our nation. Empowering 12 select individuals to make these decisions is troublesome,” said AFP President Tim Phillips. “That being said, AFP would be derelict if we didn’t provide the Super Committee with a range of spending cuts they can include in their deliberations.”

AFP’s recommendations include:

• Closing several antiquated or unsuccessful federal departments
• Repealing the new health care law and the CLASS Act
• Winding down Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac
• Reforming agriculture subsidies
• Block granting all federal welfare programs
• Reducing the rapid growth in defense spending

“We’ve provided the committee with more than enough spending cuts to accomplish their mandate. There is no excuse for the committee failing to cut at least $1.5 trillion in spending. The committee to follow the lead of several previous deficit commissions, including Simpson-Bowles, and make bold cuts to fix our fiscal deficit.” Phillips concluded. “Using tax hikes at this juncture would be economically damaging. AFP has gone out of our way to make sure our recommendations aren’t raising taxes in a recession.”
