Is one penny too much to ask for in this time of economic woes? That is the question in front of voters in St Johns County. The county wants to protect the quality of life for future generations. If passed Karen Pan, the Public Information Officer for the County says the money would be split 50/50 for improving the roads in exhisting developments and for land conservation.

If approved the sales tax increase will be for 5 years, totalling an estimated 120 million dollars. According to a survey by the Trust for Public Land, 62 percent of the total revenue will be paid by those who visit the county, not those who live there. That's great to some voters who know how many visit St. Augustine, the oldest city in the U.S.

But there are some who say an increase in taxes in this troubled time, even one penny is too much. American's for Prosperty say "the economy is slowing, unelmplouemnt is rising and the housing and financial markets are a mess. Now is not the time for a 120 million dollar tax increase." The group is holding a town hall meeting about this issue Thursday Oct. 23 at the Days Inn on North Ponce De Leon from 6-7:30.
