There’s plenty of commentary and analysis on the outcome of the 2008 election that suggests liberalism now has a mandate in America. What’s a conservative to do? If you believe that every problem is an opportunity, here’s our mandate. It’s time for us to work together like never before to make certain our voices are heard.

Don’t think for a second that free-market candidates lost at the federal level because they weren’t spending enough money. In fact, their spending orgy is much of what demotivated their traditional voting base. When the Republicans had their chance, they did not end earmarks and other spending abuses. But neither have the Democrats while they’ve controlled Congress for the past two years. The trouble is, under 20% of the electorate even knew that Democrats did control Congress during those years.

So we have a largely ignorant voting public and a newly elected President who has promised even more spending, higher taxes, and more regulation. And his Party has a majority in both chambers of Congress.

Do we run and cry or stand up and fight? We choose to use this time as a unique opportunity to grow our ranks and continue the battle with renewed vigor. AFP is still committed to the same principles – free markets, lower taxes, spending restraint, choice in education, and less regulation.
