Oh, wait. We forgot to keep reading…
The Internal Revenue Service today announced relief for taxpayers affected by Hurricane Rita.
Doh!
Still, tax relief in any form is good, even if it takes a catastrophic natural disaster to motivate the government.
But here is the ringer: if the government realizes that tax relief will help drive economic rejuvenation (not to mention give taxpayers back a little sanity), then why not extend tax relief to all taxpayers? Couldn’t we all benefit from a less complicated, burdensome tax code?
A national survey commissioned by the Tax Foundation and conducted by Harris Interactive® shows that:
An overwhelming 81 percent of adults believe the federal income tax is somewhat or very complex, and 70 percent said they either “hated” or “disliked” doing their income taxes. More than half (55%) say the amount of federal income tax they pay is too high.
Clearly the tax system needs changing and we shouldn’t have to wait for another hurricane to get it.
