Landrieu Votes Against Her Own Death Tax Reform

The death tax is the unfairest tax of all. You pay taxes your whole life, and when you die the IRS can take half of everything you leave to your children. It’s an unfair double tax and most Louisianans want to see it repealed. At the very least, the tax should be reduced to be less confiscatory. Senator Landrieu no longer has any credibility on the issue of death tax reform.

Last year Senator Landrieu voted for a filibuster to block consideration of death tax repeal. At the time she justified that vote to keep the death tax by offering her own death tax reform compromise to raise the exemption level to $5 million and set the tax rate at 35 percent. Today Senator Jon Kyl offered the Landrieu compromise as an amendment to the Senate budget resolution. Senator Landrieu voted against it.

Today’s vote shows that Senator Landrieu’s claimed support for death tax reform was pure posturing. Voters should know that, despite what she may say, Landrieu’s record proves she supports a punitive 55 percent death tax.
