Mayor Pat McCrory To Address Take Back Our State Rally

Candidate for Governor Has Pledged To Curb Out of Control State Spending by Supporting The Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TABOR).

Charlotte Mayor and Gubernatorial Candidate Pat McCrory, who has signed a pledge to support spending restraint, will address the Americans for Prosperity sponsored Take Back Our State Coalition Rally, on Wednesday June 25th at Halifax Mall in downtown Raleigh.

The rally is free and will begin at 4:30 PM, with Mr. McCrory expected to speak after 6:00 PM.

Mayor McCrory will join hundreds of free market grassroots activists, former Senator Bob Dole, former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele and members of the Take Back Our State Coalition.

TABOR is just one of the issues supported by the Take Back Our State Coalition. (For a full list visit www.takebackourstate.org)

“Americans for Prosperity is committed to placing common sense limits on the growth of government that reflect the budget limits American families must live by everyday,” said AFP-NC State Director Dallas Woodhouse. “A second tax revolt is sweeping the country and we are encouraged to see that gubernatorial candidate Pat McCrory is joining the fight by pledging to support spending limits.”

TABOR limits the growth of revenue and spending to the sum of inflation and population growth. Surpluses are put into a Budget Stabilization Fund, an Emergency Fund and then surplus revenue is returned to taxpayers through broad-based tax cuts and rebates.

The 2007 budget increased General Fund spending by 9.7% or $1.7 billion. If TABOR had been in effect it would have allowed spending to increase by 4.7% (inflation & population growth) or $811 million. In addition to 2007’s increase of 9.7%, the 2008 budget increased General Fund spending by 9.5% or $1.8 billion. With TABOR, spending would have increased by 5.5% or $1 billion. North Carolina General Fund spending would have been reduced by over $1.6 billion during this two year time period.

Across the nation, advocates of responsible government have embraced the Taxpayer's Bill of Rights (TABOR) as the most promising method of ensuring fiscal discipline and direct accountability to taxpayers.

“We are looking forward to working with state leaders to allow taxpayers to have a say in how much they are taxed. The days of state government shaking down hardworking citizens for more and more money are coming to an end,” said AFP North Carolina Director Dallas Woodhouse.
