Sales Tax Increase to be Discussed at Town Hall Meeting in St. Augustine

St. Johns County – Americans for Prosperity will be hosting a town hall meeting on Thursday, October 23rd, at 6:00pm in St. Augustine to educate taxpayers about the proposed $120 million sales tax increase.  Voters will decide the fate of the proposed tax increase in the November 4th election.  The meeting is being held at the Days Inn, located at 1300 Ponce De Leon Boulevard, St. Augustine.

“The economy is slowing, unemployment is rising, and the housing and financial markets are a mess. Now is not the time for a $120 million tax increase,” said Dan Quiggle, state chairman of Americans for Prosperity.

Americans for Prosperity formally invited all members of the St. Johns County Commission to a forum to discuss the proposed $120 million sales tax increase.  Commissioner Ron Sanchez has confirmed his attendance, but the other commissioners have not responded to the invitation yet.  Americans for Prosperity is currently finalizing the details of that separate event.

"Citizens deserve to know more information about this dangerous tax hike before going in the voting booth," stated Adam Guillette, state director of Americans for Prosperity.  "Americans for Prosperity will be holding a town hall meeting on Thursday, October 23rd, to educate taxpayers about this important issue," added Guillette.

The town hall meeting on October 23rd will be held at the Days Inn from 6:00pm until 7:30pm.  Proponents of the proposed tax increase say the funds are earmarked for transportation and conservation, but Guillette stated these funds may be used for other purposes.
