Sick Days Initiative Pulled from the Ballot

“The Ohioans for Healthy Families made a difficult and carefully considered decision to remove the Ohio Healthy Families Act from the November, 2008 Ohio state ballot. Governor Strickland, Senator Sherrod Brown, and many other state leaders are united with Ohioans for Healthy Families in the belief that all American workers should be able to take care of themselves and their families when illness strikes…

…The coalition was pleased that Governor Strickland joined us in a course of action that was best for Ohioans, and all Americans. Together we will work with Senator Brown and other co-sponsors of the Healthy Families Act to enact a national solution that allows all Americans the right to earn paid sick days for themselves and their families.

To prevent a divisive campaign filled with false claims about the impact of paid sick days on Ohio’s economy, Ohioans for Healthy Families has turned its focus to a solution that includes all states and all Americans.

All American workers, including the 2.2 million Ohioans who do not have access to them, need and should have the right to earn paid sick days. No worker should lose a job or a paycheck simply because he or she, a child, or other immediate family member occasionally gets sick. Paid Sick Days are a simple and necessary precaution to protect the public against the needless spread of illness in restaurants and other workplaces. Allowing workers the right to earn them is fair, reasonable, and good for public health.

Every Public Opinion Poll has demonstrated voter support for the Healthy Families Act. It is with this support and momentum that we will work towards a federal standard that allows workers to earn paid sick days. A recent and major national poll conducted by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago, showed that 77% of Americans believe paid sick days should be a workplace standard and 86% feel that employers should be required by law to allow workers to earn them.

The coalition and its supporters will not rest until earning paid sick days is a reality for all Americans.

Thank you for all of your continued help in the fight to allow all American workers the right to earn paid sick days.”
