If one group of taxpayers gets their way, You may be able to vote on any new hikes.
The group "Americans for Prosperity" is pushing for a taxpayers bill of rights. It would allow you to have the say over how your money is spent.
Group director Adam Guillette says they're pushing the plan to county commissioners, to require officials to get your approval for any tax increases.
The plan would also freeze taxes at last years levels, and only allow increases for population growth and inflation, without voter approval. If the government collects more money than it spends, it would have to issue a refund to you.
But refunds aren't on the mind of Jacksonville politicians, especially Mayor Peyton, who says he's facing a major challenge.
Peyton says financial uncertainty created in Tallahassee means it's time to rethink the way Jacksonville does business :
"That may mean rethinking the way we regenerate revenue, rethinking the way we itemize out expenses and organize our structures..."
"These are extraordinary circumstances that will require extraordinary leadership, of course the council has the final say on this budget, I'm going to ask them to do some things that, quite frankly, may be out of their comfort zone"
He'll present the budget to council on July 16th.
